Design & Technology at Templars: Creative Thinkers, Problem-Solvers, Future Innovators

At Templars, Design & Technology empowers children to think boldly, create purposefully and understand how ideas become real. Our curriculum gives every pupil the skills, confidence and imagination to design, make and evaluate products that solve real problems in an ever-changing world.

From the earliest years, children learn essential practical skills—cutting, joining, shaping and constructing—while using the language of design with growing precision. As they move through school, their knowledge deepens: they explore mechanisms, structures, textiles, food technology, digital design and CAD, applying scientific, mathematical and artistic thinking at every step.

Across all year groups, pupils take on meaningful projects such as jewellery making, sewing slippers, building moving mechanisms or cooking nutritious meals. These experiences nurture creativity, resilience and teamwork, while helping children see themselves as designers with ideas that matter.

Children also meet inspiring figures from the world of design—architects, engineers and inventors such as Zaha Hadid, Heston Blumenthal and Jonathan Ive—showing them how imagination, innovation and determination can shape the world.

By the end of Year 6, pupils at Templars will:

  • Design purposeful, functional products by researching, planning, modelling and evaluating.

  • Use tools and equipment safely and confidently, from hammers to saws to sewing needles.

  • Apply technical knowledge in mechanisms, structures, electronics, textiles and food technology.

  • Work collaboratively, listen to others’ ideas and solve problems with creativity and empathy.

  • Understand how design choices affect the environment and make ethical, sustainable decisions.

  • Use increasingly sophisticated technical vocabulary to explain their thinking.

Our ambition is that every child leaves Templars as a resourceful, imaginative and capable young designer—ready to innovate, ready to take risks and ready to shape the future with ideas that could change the world.
