English at Templars: Confident Communicators, Powerful Readers, Accomplished Writers.
At Templars, English sits at the heart of our ambition for every child. We want pupils to leave Year 6 as fluent, thoughtful and expressive communicators—readers who love books, writers who craft their ideas with skill, and speakers who use language with confidence and purpose.
From the very beginning, children build strong foundations through high-quality phonics teaching. Read Write Inc. helps pupils quickly master the sounds they need to read and write, with additional support offered whenever needed so every child keeps pace.
Our curriculum is shaped by rich, carefully chosen texts. Each topic is anchored in high-quality books that immerse pupils in new worlds, broaden their vocabulary and spark their imagination. Writing flows from reading: pupils study powerful models, learn ambitious vocabulary and practise the craft of shaping sentences with clarity and impact. Daily opportunities to explore new words, discuss texts and apply grammar and spelling ensure that children develop precision and control in their writing.
Reading for pleasure is woven through school life. Pupils enjoy daily reading time, share class novels, write reviews and take part in events that celebrate the joy of stories. Our resource centre and home-reading offer help every child build a reading identity that lasts.
Expert teaching is central to our approach. Through clear modelling and guided practice, pupils learn how writers think, plan and craft their work. Kinetic Letters supports children to develop fluent, legible handwriting that enables them to present their ideas confidently.
By the end of Year 6, pupils at Templars can:
-
Read with fluency, insight and enjoyment across a wide range of genres.
-
Write with accuracy, imagination and purpose, drawing on a strong command of grammar, vocabulary and structure.
-
Speak and listen with confidence, adapting language to suit audience and purpose.
-
Use reading and writing as gateways to wider learning, curiosity and independence.
Our English curriculum sends pupils onward as literate, articulate young people—ready for the next stage of their education and fully equipped to thrive in the world beyond Templars.
