Art at Templars: Creative Thinkers, Skilled Makers, Confident Visual Communicators

At Templars, Art is a celebration of identity, culture and imagination. Our curriculum is built on the belief that every child can be an artist and that the creative world should represent and inspire us all. Pupils encounter artists, craftspeople and designers from diverse backgrounds so they can see themselves—and the possibilities ahead of them—reflected in their learning.

From the Early Years, children explore colour, texture and form through play and guided experimentation. From Year 1 onwards, sketchbooks become a powerful tool for recording ideas, testing techniques and developing visual thinking. Pupils learn key skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and collage, drawing inspiration from local artists in Coventry as well as creators from around the world.

In Key Stage 2, children refine their craft further. They work with more complex processes—clay work, compositional planning, image transfer and 3D design—while using their sketchbooks to take risks, annotate ideas, evaluate outcomes and develop independence as young artists. Cross-curricular links deepen understanding, helping pupils represent knowledge visually and communicate ideas beyond words.

By the end of Year 6, pupils at Templars will:

  • Use sketchbooks confidently to plan, explore, experiment and evaluate.

  • Apply a wide range of artistic techniques with control, creativity and imagination.

  • Understand composition, colour, texture, pattern and form, and use these purposefully in their own work.

  • Talk about art using rich vocabulary and draw inspiration from diverse artists and cultures.

  • Express their identity through art and appreciate the role creativity plays in understanding the world.

  • Approach creative challenges with curiosity, resilience and originality.

Our ambition is that every child leaves Templars as a confident, expressive and skilled young artist—ready to use their creativity to shape ideas, tell stories and enrich the world around them.
