French at Templars: Confident Communicators, Culturally Aware Citizens, Ready for a Global Future.
At Templars, learning French opens the door to a wider world. Our modern languages curriculum gives every KS2 pupil a rich and ambitious linguistic experience, building the confidence, knowledge and curiosity needed to become skilled communicators beyond their first language.
Weekly lessons, taught by a specialist, develop secure foundations in phonics, vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure. Pupils learn to listen carefully, understand spoken French, read simple texts and express themselves clearly—sharing ideas, facts and opinions with growing accuracy and fluency.
Cultural awareness runs through everything we teach. Children explore French-speaking countries and cultures, compare traditions with their own and celebrate the many languages spoken across our school community. This fosters empathy, respect and pride in their identity while helping them see themselves as part of a diverse, interconnected world.
By the end of Year 6, pupils at Templars will:
-
Understand and respond to spoken and written French on familiar topics.
-
Use key vocabulary and grammatical structures to communicate clearly and confidently.
-
Ask and answer questions, describe themselves and others, and express preferences and opinions.
-
Recognise links between languages and apply strategies that support further language learning.
-
Appreciate cultural diversity and understand their role as respectful global citizens.
Our ambition is that every child leaves Templars with strong foundations for secondary languages, a love of learning about other cultures and the belief that languages open new opportunities—for study, for connection and for their future in an increasingly global world.
