Music at Templars: Confident Performers, Creative Thinkers, Global Listeners
At Templars, music is a powerful part of our curriculum—a universal language that helps children connect with the world, express themselves confidently and understand the rich diversity of human creativity. We believe every child deserves a vibrant musical education that unlocks joy, discipline and imagination.
From the Early Years onward, pupils learn through singing, rhythm and play, building a strong foundation of musical awareness. This love of singing grows throughout the school and culminates in unforgettable experiences such as performing with thousands of other children at Young Voices, inspiring pupils to see themselves as real musicians.
Our curriculum, supported by Charanga and enriched through Coventry Music Hub, introduces children to a wide range of musical genres, cultures and traditions. They develop their listening skills, learn to articulate preferences and opinions, and begin to understand how music reflects identity, history and community.
Instrumental learning is central to the Templars experience.
-
In Key Stage 1, children explore percussion, djembes and glockenspiels.
-
In Key Stage 2, they study an instrument over time, learning to read musical notation, play with increasing control and perform with confidence.
-
Specialist teachers further extend opportunities through keyboard tuition and ensemble experiences.
By the end of Year 6, pupils at Templars will:
-
Perform with confidence—individually and as part of an ensemble.
-
Understand and use key musical vocabulary to describe, compare and evaluate music.
-
Play a range of instruments with control, expression and accuracy.
-
Read and interpret simple notation.
-
Appreciate music from diverse cultures, genres and eras.
-
Use music as a tool for expression, wellbeing and creativity.
Our ambition is for every child to leave Templars with a deep appreciation for music, the confidence to perform, and the belief that they can take their musical passions—and the skills they’ve built—forward into every area of life.
