Relentless Routines
Relentless Routines for Curriculum Implementation
Each theme unfolds through a consistent, research-informed framework that supports deep, connected learning.

1. Provisional Planning
Before a theme begins, teachers explore the subject Intent Documents to understand the knowledge, skills and vocabulary pupils will encounter. They identify their own areas for development, consider high-impact pedagogy, and plan visits or visitors that enrich the learning journey.
2. The Knowledge Harvest
This energising starting point celebrates what children already know and triggers curiosity about what comes next. Used at the beginning, midpoint and end of a theme, the Knowledge Harvest strengthens retrieval, reveals misconceptions and helps pupils see their own progress.
3. Pre-Learning Tasks
Pupils shape their curriculum by sharing what interests them, what they already grasp and where misconceptions lie. These tasks inform teacher planning and support authentic family engagement through topic webs and Knowledge Organisers published on our website.
Spark Days
At the start of each theme, Spark Days immerse pupils in awe and wonder. Staff model intellectual curiosity, encouraging learners to ask questions, connect ideas and anticipate the learning ahead. These memorable experiences ignite motivation and support positive learning behaviours across the curriculum.
Teaching and Learning at Templars
Our curriculum builds progression within each subject discipline while allowing teachers professional autonomy in lesson design. Children learn through approaches informed by leading research—including Cognitive Load Theory, Spaced Retrieval Practice, Rosenshine’s Principles and Dual Coding—applied with intelligence and flexibility.
-
All subjects are taught over each term, with scope for thoughtful blocking
-
Reading, writing, mathematics and computing are applied authentically across themes
-
Knowledge Organisers, topic webs and homework materials support families each half-term
-
Longer thematic blocks allow for richer, deeper learning while embracing national events and celebrations that broaden cultural capital
Assemblies further strengthen SMSC and British Values, ensuring our curriculum builds character as well as knowledge.
Developing Knowledge, Fluency and Depth
Every learning sequence intentionally builds:
Knowledge – the secure foundation of essential facts and cultural capital
Fluency – the ability to discuss, question, debate and think critically
Depth – the confidence to create, perform and express understanding with clarity and flair
We blend pedagogies to ensure every child moves from initial encounters with knowledge to mastery.
Boost Days
Midway through the year, Boost Days reignite curiosity, deepen understanding and energise learners through rich, hands-on experiences aligned to the ongoing theme.
Assessment Week
Assessment Week brings purposeful reflection. Through quizzes, extended writing, White Rose maths assessments, Reading Detectives and Knowledge Harvests, pupils consolidate understanding while teachers gain secure insight into progress—without narrowing the curriculum or teaching to the test.
Be Our Guest Events
Once a term, families are invited into school to celebrate learning. These events build pride, communication skills and a strong sense of community identity. They also deepen pupils’ ability to explain, recall and apply what they have learned.
