Geography at Templars: Global Citizens, Curious Explorers, Confident Navigators of the World

At Templars, geography is taught as a subject that builds pride in where our children come from while opening their eyes to the incredible diversity of the world beyond Coventry. Our curriculum nurtures curiosity, celebrates community and helps pupils understand how people, places and environments are connected.

From the Early Years, children begin by exploring Tile Hill and Coventry—learning the human and physical features of their local area and developing a strong sense of belonging. They also encounter contrasting environments, sparking early questions about difference, diversity and global connection.

As pupils move into Key Stage 1, their geographical lens widens. They place Coventry within the West Midlands, explore nearby cities and start to build a mental map of the UK and the wider world. Rich fieldwork experiences, visits and local studies deepen their understanding and bring learning to life.

In Key Stage 2, children study a broader range of places—Europe, North and South America and significant global locations. They learn about climate, landscapes, human geography and environmental change, and explore real-world issues such as migration, sustainability and global responsibility. Pupils meet diverse figures from the world of geography whose achievements show that anyone can shape our understanding of the planet.

By the end of Year 6, pupils at Templars will:

  • Use maps, atlases and digital tools confidently to locate countries, regions and key geographical features.

  • Compare places across the world, explaining similarities, differences and the reasons behind them.

  • Understand processes such as erosion, weather, climate, settlement and trade.

  • Carry out meaningful fieldwork—observing, measuring and drawing conclusions.

  • Explain how human actions impact the environment and recognise their responsibility to care for the planet.

  • Speak knowledgeably about global issues and their place within an interconnected world.

Our ambition is that every child leaves Templars as a thoughtful, informed and responsible young geographer—proud of their roots, curious about the world and ready to play an active part in shaping its future.
