History at Templars: Understanding Our Past, Shaping Our Future

At Templars, history is taught as a powerful story of people, place and possibility. Our curriculum is rooted in belonging: children learn where they come from, how communities like ours were shaped, and how the past continues to influence the world they are growing into.

From the earliest years, pupils begin to recognise and talk about events in their own lives. By Key Stage 1, they start to explore the history on their doorstep—discovering the origins of Coventry, the stories of significant people and events, and how these help them understand their place in the world.

As they move through school, pupils build deep, connected knowledge through the Big Ideas of History:
Location, Chronology, Culture & Religion, Significant Events, Significant People and Legacy. These concepts give children a strong, repeatable framework so they can compare periods, make links across time and retrieve their learning with confidence.

By the time pupils reach Year 6, they can confidently:

  • Place ancient civilisations, world events and British history in chronological order.

  • Explain how societies lived, what they believed and why they changed.

  • Understand the legacies of past civilisations and how these still shape modern life.

  • Ask thoughtful historical questions, analyse evidence and draw informed conclusions.

  • See themselves as part of a wider story—one shaped by culture, community and global connection.

Our curriculum takes children from local history to national and world history, from the ancient world to the modern era. It equips them with a rich understanding of human achievement, resilience and innovation.

Above all, history at Templars nurtures curiosity. Pupils leave us as knowledgeable, questioning and culturally aware young historians—ready to navigate the world with a strong sense of identity, heritage and possibility.
