Maths at Templars: Fluent Thinkers, Confident Problem-Solvers, Mathematicians for Life
At Templars, we believe every child can achieve highly in mathematics. Our curriculum empowers pupils to understand the world through numbers, patterns and relationships, and to use mathematics with confidence, curiosity and precision. We aim to develop learners who not only succeed academically but enjoy the beauty, power and creativity of maths.
Children study maths daily through a well-structured, mastery-led approach. Using White Rose Maths and Mastering Number, pupils build strong foundations in number, calculation, geometry, measures and statistics. Concepts are introduced through concrete, pictorial and abstract representations so that all children develop deep, secure understanding and can make meaningful connections across topics.
Fluency, reasoning and problem-solving are at the heart of every lesson. Pupils regularly revisit prior learning through spaced retrieval practice, helping them move key knowledge into long-term memory. Where needed, learning is consolidated before pupils progress—ensuring no child is left behind.
Mathematics is brought to life across the curriculum. Children apply their skills in science, design, computing and real-life contexts, strengthening their understanding and showing them how mathematical thinking shapes the world.
Tools such as Times Table Rockstars build confidence and fluency, preparing pupils for the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check and supporting rapid recall that unlocks more complex learning.
By the end of Year 6, pupils at Templars will:
-
Use age-appropriate methods with confidence and accuracy.
-
Reason mathematically—spotting patterns, justifying answers and explaining their thinking.
-
Apply knowledge to sophisticated, multi-step problems.
-
Recall key number facts fluently, including all multiplication tables.
-
Use mathematical vocabulary precisely and communicate ideas clearly.
-
Approach challenges with resilience, curiosity and a belief that effort leads to success.
Our ambition is that every child leaves Templars as a capable, confident mathematician—ready for the demands of secondary school and inspired by the potential of mathematics in their future lives.
