British Values
In year 6 we aim for pupils to begin to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England.
Pupils learn about how the Crown and the UK Government, including the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers make policy, and the UK Parliament, comprising the Crown, the House of Commons and the House of Lords pass law. Pupils have the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament during their end of year residential to our capital city. We aim to encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England. Our MP and Coventry's Mayor are invited to visit the school each year.
As part of their PSHE curriculum, pupils are taught to make the right choices surrounding use of the internet, drugs and alcohol using a wider range of resources. They learn about the rules that are in place in society to prevent misuse of these and learn how to keep safe. Pupils learn about the British legal system and are visited by both the police and the magistrates service during their final year further enabling them to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England.
In History lessons, pupils focus on significant changes in 20th century Britain exploring key influential people, selected for diversity, and how they have affected society across Britain, Europe and the world.
