At Templars we teach Phonics and Maths daily. In our phonics this half term we are beginning with the most commonly used sounds as dictated by the Read, Write Inc. scheme of learning. During our Read, Write Inc. sessions we will be developing our listening skills to hear the sounds in words, alongside the initial formation of the sounds. In Maths we will be learning all about Numbers and the number system.

Supporting your child with phonics

You can support your child at home by practicing letter formation and encouraging them to identify the initial sounds in words, e.g. "s for sun" or "g for gate". You can also help by regularly sharing stories at home with your child to develop their interest in reading and story language.

Supporting your child with maths

Go on number hunts, point to numbers everywhere, count everything. For example how many stairs you climb, steps to the kitchen, forks at the table, people in your house etc. 

Look out for 2D and 3D shapes in the environment and encourage your child to describe what they can see. Use simple addition and subtraction at home for example when setting the table "I have 2 forks and 2 knives, how many do I have altogether?"
